Day 2

Our first day down in Florida was officially a success!

We pulled into Disney Springs right around lunch time, and that’s the perfect time to be at Disney Springs. So many food options! And, surprisingly enough, not terribly expensive. And all the shops! I only hit up the year-round Christmas store, the Disney Store, and a Star Wars store, but we could have easily spent the entire day there and barely scratched the surface. But after only a couple of hours, we hopped back onto our coach bus and headed to Hollywood Studios!

Here is where a lot of that “Disney Magic” you hear so much about started to show itself. Everything was an incredible production! From the Tower of Terror (one of the photos is with two of the chaperones and the directors in line for that ride. #oldpeoplecanhavefuntoo) to the Star Wars march down Main Street to an exciting Indiana Jones stunt show to the Rockin’ Roller Coaster, everything I went to was so much fun!

But all of that pales in comparison to Fantasmic. This show was the definite highlight of the trip so far. The sheer spectacle of it was amazing! Some background: it’s held in a giant outdoor ampitheater with the “set” being a rock mountain surrounded by water. (Incidentally, if you thought cleaning the Iowa State Fair Grandstands took a while, I can’t imagine cleaning these grandstands!) Mickey comes out and basically dreams his way through Disney’s greatest hits, with the help of some incredible water, lighting, projection, costumes, and pyrotechnic effects. At one point, the water was ON FIRE while a giant dragon was fighting Mickey. Needless to say, I’m pretty sure I just had a dumb grin on my face the entire time. Let’s see Magic Kingdom top that!

But finally it was time to check in to our hotel. It’s a neat place with an indoor courtyard with a great pool that the students took full advantage of. There are worse places to live for three nights! And now, with only one student protesting giving up their phones for the night, everybody is tucked away safe and sound.

Until tomorrow!
